the Access Collective - low cost, permanent 'Net access.

The Access Collective aims to bring low cost, permanent Internet access to entities in Adelaide, South Australia.

The Access Collective is being set up to provide members with a 24x7, 33.6k permanent modem connection and other services for a low cost to entities in the Adelaide metro area.

Each member will have an equal stake in the Collective and so will have equal say in the current and future direction of the Collective. Setup and access fees will go completely towards paying the collective's costs, nothing else. The Collective is not for profit.

Only seven places in the Collective will be initially available. It is aimed to be running by the end of Febuary, so interest should be registered (via email to mike@vee.net) before the end of this month. It is aimed at non-commercial entities, but commercial entities will be admitted, subject to restrictions.

Here are some features of the service:

  • 24x7 33.6k permanent connection
  • unlimited traffic
  • full hosting facilities (dns, web, ftp, email)
  • server space available off-site (to minimise link traffic)
  • up to 29 ip addresses available per member
  • full access (no facist proxying, firewalling, logging, etc.)
  • any other bells and whistles that can be feasibly implemented

In the future, access via ISDN, radio ethernet and other media may be possible

Costs are expected to be $100-$200 setup, then $50/month +telco costs
